1. What Is a Webtoon vs. Manga vs. Manhwa?
If you are transitioning from Japanese manga or American comic books, understanding the medium terminology will help you navigate online catalogs with ease:
| Format / Medium | Country of Origin | Reading Direction | Color & Presentation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manga (漫画) | Japan | Right-to-Left (Paginated) | Traditionally Black & White (with occasional color splash pages) |
| Manhwa / Webtoons (만화) | South Korea | Top-to-Bottom Vertical Scroll | 100% Full-Color digital format tailored for mobile scrolling |
| Manhua (漫画) | China | Left-to-Right or Top-to-Bottom | Full-Color digital or paginated format focusing on Xianxia/Wuxia lore |
2. The Vertical-Scroll Revolution on Mobile Screens
Unlike traditional print comics constrained by rigid page dimensions, Korean webtoons use vertical infinity scrolling. Top studios like REDICE, LICO, and YLAB utilize vertical panel spacing to simulate cinematic passage of time, sweeping scale, and kinetic action impacts.
